Equal and Not Equal on a Balance

Four toy blocks are counted onto each side of a balance one at a time, and when it comes level, 4 = 4 is written underneath and read as "4 is the same as 4". Then one block comes off, the balance tips, the side is counted again, and the equal sign is crossed out to show 4 ≠ 3, ending on "Level means equal. Tipped means not equal."

What the lesson says

When are the two sides equal? A balance can show us how.

These toy blocks are all the same.

Put 4 blocks on this side: 1, 2, 3, 4.

Now put 4 blocks on that side: 1, 2, 3, 4.

Both sides have 4, so the balance is level.

Level means the two sides are equal. We show equal with this sign.

The equal sign means is the same as. So 4 is the same as 4.

Now take 1 block off this side.

Look, now the balance is tipped. It is not level anymore.

Count this side again: 1, 2, 3.

4 and 3 are not the same. So they are not equal.

For not equal, cross out the equal sign. 4 is not equal to 3.

Level means equal. Tipped means not equal.
