Equal and Not Equal on a Balance

Toy blocks go on a balance one at a time: 3 + 4 on one side and 5 + 2 on the other both make 7, the balance comes level, and the question mark between the two sums becomes the equal sign, meaning both sides are the same amount. One more block turns 5 + 2 into 5 + 3, which makes 8, so the balance tips and the equal sign is crossed out to make the not equal sign: 3 + 4 ≠ 5 + 3.

Transcript

What the lesson says

Is 3 plus 4 the same as 5 plus 2?

A balance will help us find out.

All of these blocks weigh the same.

Put 3 blocks and 4 blocks on this side.

3 and 4 make 7 blocks.

Put 5 blocks and 2 blocks on that side.

5 and 2 make 7 too. It is level!

Level means equal: 3 plus 4 equals 5 plus 2.

The equal sign means both sides are the same amount.

Put 1 more block on that side. 5 and 3 make 8.

It tips down. 7 and 8 are not the same.

A line through equal means not equal.

So 3 plus 4 is not equal to 5 plus 3.

Equal means the same amount. Not equal means not the same.
