We earn $20 raking leaves and put it in three jars: $10 to spend, $5 to save and $5 to give, and $10 + $5 + $5 = $20 checks the plan. We then buy a $7 book with the $10 bill, count up 8, 9, 10 to get $3 change ($7 + $3 = $10), and choose to save it, so the save jar grows to $5 + $3 = $8.

What the lesson says

We earn 20 dollars by raking a neighbour's leaves.

We can choose to spend, save or give our money.

We put 10 dollars in the spend jar, to buy things now.

We put 5 dollars in the save jar, to keep it for later.

We put 5 dollars in the give jar, to help others.

Check the plan: 10 plus 5 plus 5 makes 20 dollars.

Can we buy a book that costs 7 dollars?

Yes, because 7 dollars is less than the 10 dollars in our spend jar.

We pay with our 10 dollar bill.

To find the change, count up from 7: 8, 9, 10.

Our change is 3 dollars, because 7 plus 3 makes 10.

We choose to save the 3 dollars in change.

Now the save jar has 5 plus 3, which makes 8 dollars.

When we earn money, we choose how much to spend, save and give.
