A $50 backpack is 20% off and has a 10% tax added, and the video works out what you pay in two steps: 20% of $50 is $10, so the sale price is $40, then 10% of $40 is $4, so you pay $44. A row of three price boxes (price, sale price, you pay) fills in as each amount is found, showing that the tax is worked out on the sale price, not the old price.

Transcript

What the lesson says

A backpack costs 50 dollars.

Today it is on sale at 20 percent off.

A 10 percent tax is added at the checkout.

So how much do you pay?

Take the discount off first, then add the tax.

The discount is 20 percent of 50 dollars, which is 10 dollars.

50 dollars minus 10 dollars is 40 dollars.

So the sale price is 40 dollars.

The tax is worked out on the sale price, not the old price.

The tax is 10 percent of 40 dollars, which is 4 dollars.

40 dollars plus 4 dollars is 44 dollars.

So you pay 44 dollars for the backpack.

Remember: take the discount off first, then add tax on the sale price.
