Using towers of ten and ten frames of cubes, the video moves two ones from 37 over to 48, so 48 becomes the friendly number 50 and 37 becomes 35, while the total stays the same. It then counts on from 50 by tens and ones (60, 70, 80, then 81 to 85) to show that 48 + 37 = 85, and ends with the recap "Make a friendly number first, then add."

What the lesson says

What is forty-eight plus thirty-seven? Let's use cubes.

Forty-eight is four tens and eight ones.

Thirty-seven is three tens and seven ones.

Fifty is a friendly number. It is easy to add.

Forty-eight needs two more ones to make fifty.

Move two ones over. Forty-nine, fifty.

Ten ones snap together to make a new ten.

Forty-eight plus two is fifty.

Thirty-seven take away two is thirty-five.

The total is the same. Now add fifty and thirty-five.

Count on from fifty: sixty, seventy, eighty.

Eighty-one, eighty-two, eighty-three, eighty-four, eighty-five.

So forty-eight plus thirty-seven is eighty-five.

Make a friendly number first, then add.
