One labelled diagram builds up step by step: a home router joins a laptop and phone by Wi-Fi and a computer by a cable, then links the home network to the Internet, drawn as a cloud that is a network of networks, where small packets of data travel to a web server and bring a page back. A school intranet then works like a private Internet just for the school, with a lock that keeps out people without permission, ending on the recap "Networks link devices. The Internet links networks."

What the lesson says

How do our devices connect to each other and to the Internet?

At home, devices join together in a home network.

At the centre of the home network is a router.

The laptop and phone connect to the router by Wi-Fi, which uses radio waves.

The computer plugs into the router with a cable.

The router also links the home network to the Internet.

The Internet is a network of networks that reaches around the world.

When you open a website, the laptop sends data in small pieces called packets.

The packets cross the Internet to a web server, the computer that stores the website.

The web server sends the page back to the laptop in packets too.

A school can also run its own intranet.

An intranet works like a private Internet, just for the school.

The school is on the Internet too, but only people with permission can use its intranet.

Networks link our devices, and the Internet links networks around the world.
