Grade 6, Measurement and geometry
Volume of rectangular prisms
Find the volume and capacity of rectangular prisms, or a missing side.
Three levels
One skill, rising difficulty
Each sheet carries one level. The three are the same skill at rising difficulty, each named for what it practises.
- Level 1: Small prisms
- Find the volume of each prism.
- Level 2: Larger prisms
- Find the volume of each prism. 1 cm³ holds 1 mL.
- Level 3: Find the missing side
- Use the volume to find the missing side.
Worked example
How the sheet explains it
The helper printed at the top of each sheet: one solved example and the steps a student follows, before the first question. Every number sentence in it is proven by the same checker as the answer key.
Level 1: Small prisms
- Volume of a rectangular prism = length × width × height.
- The bottom layer holds 5 × 3 = 15 cubes. There are 4 layers.
- Volume = 15 × 4 = 60 cm³.
Level 2: Larger prisms
- Volume = length × width × height = 12 × 5 × 4 = 240 cm³.
- 1 cm³ holds 1 mL.
- So the prism holds 240 mL.
Level 3: Find the missing side
Volume = 168 cm³ Length = 7 cm Width = 4 cm Height = 6 cm
- Volume = length × width × height, so divide the volume by one side you know, then by the other.
- 168 ÷ 7 = 24, then 24 ÷ 4 = 6.
- Check: 7 × 4 × 6 = 168. The height is 6 cm.
