Grade 6, Measurement and geometry
Area of triangles and parallelograms, mixed
Mixed review: find the area of triangles and parallelograms, or a missing base or height.
Three levels
One skill, rising difficulty
Each sheet carries one level. The three are the same skill at rising difficulty, each named for what it practises.
- Level 1: Base and height to 10
- Find the area of each shape. Check if it is a triangle or a parallelogram first.
- Level 2: Base or height above 10
- Find the area of each shape. Check if it is a triangle or a parallelogram first. Some answers end in .5.
- Level 3: Find the missing base or height
- Use the area to find the missing base or height. Check the shape first.
Worked example
How the sheet explains it
The helper printed at the top of each sheet: one solved example and the steps a student follows, before the first question. Every number sentence in it is proven by the same checker as the answer key.
Level 1: Base and height to 10
- Name the shape first. This is a triangle, so find base × height, then halve it.
- Area = 8 × 7 ÷ 2 = 56 ÷ 2 = 28 cm².
- A parallelogram with the same base and height would be 8 × 7 = 56 cm².
Level 2: Base or height above 10
- This shape is a parallelogram, so area = base × height. For a triangle, halve that.
- Split 11 into 10 and 1: 18 × 10 = 180 and 18 × 1 = 18.
- Add the parts: 180 + 18 = 198. Area = 18 × 11 = 198 cm².
Level 3: Find the missing base or height
Triangle Area = 30 cm² Base = 12 cm Height = 5 cm
- It is a triangle, so undo the halving first: 2 × 30 = 60.
- Divide by the measure you know: 60 ÷ 5 = 12, so the base is 12 cm.
- Check: 12 × 5 ÷ 2 = 30 cm².
- A parallelogram has no halving to undo: divide its area by the measure you know.
