Grade 6, Measurement and geometry

Area of parallelograms

Find the area of parallelograms as base times height, or find a missing base or height.

Three levels

One skill, rising difficulty

Each sheet carries one level. The three are the same skill at rising difficulty, each named for what it practises.

Level 1: Base and height to 10
Find the area of each parallelogram.
Level 2: Base or height above 10
Find the area of each parallelogram.
Level 3: Find the missing base or height
Use the area to find the missing base or height of each parallelogram.

Worked example

How the sheet explains it

The helper printed at the top of each sheet: one solved example and the steps a student follows, before the first question. Every number sentence in it is proven by the same checker as the answer key.

Level 1: Base and height to 10

  1. A parallelogram can be cut and moved to make a rectangle with the same base and height.
  2. Area = base × height. Use the height that makes a square corner, not the slanted side.
  3. Area = 8 × 7 = 56 cm².

Level 2: Base or height above 10

  1. Area of a parallelogram = base × height.
  2. Split 16 into 10 and 6: 10 × 12 = 120 and 6 × 12 = 72.
  3. Add the parts: 120 + 72 = 192. Area = 16 × 12 = 192 cm².

Level 3: Find the missing base or height

Area = 72 cm² Base = 9 cm Height = 8 cm

  1. Area = base × height, so divide the area by the measure you know.
  2. 72 ÷ 8 = 9, so the base is 9 cm.
  3. Check: 9 × 8 = 72 cm².
