Grade 7, Measurement and geometry

Volume of cylinders

Find the volume of cylinders as the area of the base times the height.

Three levels

One skill, rising difficulty

Each sheet carries one level. The three are the same skill at rising difficulty, each named for what it practises.

Level 1: Small radius
Find the volume of each cylinder. Use 3.14 for pi.
Level 2: Larger cylinders
Find the volume of each cylinder. Use 3.14 for pi.
Level 3: Mixed with a diameter given in words
Find the volume of each cylinder. Use 3.14 for pi.

Worked example

How the sheet explains it

The helper printed at the top of each sheet: one solved example and the steps a student follows, before the first question. Every number sentence in it is proven by the same checker as the answer key.

Level 1: Small radius

  1. Volume of a cylinder = area of the base × height.
  2. The base is a circle. Its area is pi × radius × radius: with 3.14 for pi, 3.14 × 3 × 3 = 28.26 cm².
  3. Volume = 28.26 × 8 = 226.08 cm³.

Level 2: Larger cylinders

  1. Volume of a cylinder = area of the base × height.
  2. The base is a circle. Its area is pi × radius × radius: with 3.14 for pi, 3.14 × 5 × 5 = 78.5 cm².
  3. Volume = 78.5 × 10 = 785 cm³.

Level 3: Mixed with a diameter given in words

Diameter = 6 cm Height = 10 cm Volume = 282.6 cm³

  1. The radius is half the diameter: 6 ÷ 2 = 3 cm.
  2. The base is a circle. Its area is pi × radius × radius: with 3.14 for pi, 3.14 × 3 × 3 = 28.26 cm².
  3. Volume = 28.26 × 10 = 282.6 cm³.
