Grade 7, Measurement and geometry
Circumference and area of circles, mixed
Mixed review: find the circumference or the area of circles, using 3.14 for pi.
Three levels
One skill, rising difficulty
Each sheet carries one level. The three are the same skill at rising difficulty, each named for what it practises.
- Level 1: From the radius
- Find the circumference or the area, as each question asks. Use 3.14 for pi.
- Level 2: From the diameter
- Find the circumference or the area, as each question asks. Use 3.14 for pi.
- Level 3: Radius or diameter, larger numbers
- Find the circumference or the area, as each question asks. Use 3.14 for pi.
Worked example
How the sheet explains it
The helper printed at the top of each sheet: one solved example and the steps a student follows, before the first question. Every number sentence in it is proven by the same checker as the answer key.
Level 1: From the radius
- This one asks for the area: pi × radius × radius. Radius × radius = 6 × 6 = 36.
- With 3.14 for pi: area = 3.14 × 36 = 113.04 cm².
- For a circumference, use pi × diameter. The diameter is twice the radius: 2 × 6 = 12 cm.
- The circumference would be 3.14 × 12 = 37.68 cm.
Level 2: From the diameter
- This one asks for the circumference: pi × diameter. With 3.14 for pi: 3.14 × 16 = 50.24 cm.
- Check with 3 instead of 3.14: 3 × 16 = 48, which is close to 50.24.
- For an area, use pi × radius × radius. The radius is half the diameter: 16 ÷ 2 = 8 cm.
- The area would be 3.14 × 8 × 8 = 200.96 cm².
Level 3: Radius or diameter, larger numbers
- It asks for the area and shows the diameter, so halve it first: 36 ÷ 2 = 18 cm.
- Radius × radius = 18 × 18 = 324.
- Area = pi × radius × radius. With 3.14 for pi: 3.14 × 324 = 1017.36 cm².
- For a circumference, use pi × diameter. If the radius is shown, double it first.
