Grade 7, Measurement and geometry
Area of circles
Find the area of circles from the radius or the diameter, using 3.14 for pi.
Three levels
One skill, rising difficulty
Each sheet carries one level. The three are the same skill at rising difficulty, each named for what it practises.
- Level 1: From the radius
- Find the area of each circle. Use 3.14 for pi.
- Level 2: From the diameter
- Find the area of each circle. Use 3.14 for pi.
- Level 3: Larger circles, radius or diameter
- Find the area of each circle. Use 3.14 for pi.
Worked example
How the sheet explains it
The helper printed at the top of each sheet: one solved example and the steps a student follows, before the first question. Every number sentence in it is proven by the same checker as the answer key.
Level 1: From the radius
- Area of a circle = pi × radius × radius.
- Radius × radius = 7 × 7 = 49.
- With 3.14 for pi: area = 3.14 × 49 = 153.86 cm².
- Check with 3 instead of 3.14: 3 × 49 = 147, which is close to 153.86.
Level 2: From the diameter
- The radius is half the diameter: 12 ÷ 2 = 6 cm.
- Area = pi × radius × radius. With 3.14 for pi: 3.14 × 6 × 6 = 113.04 cm².
- Do not use the diameter: 3.14 × 12 × 12 = 452.16, four times too big.
Level 3: Larger circles, radius or diameter
- The picture shows the diameter. The radius is half of it: 30 ÷ 2 = 15 cm.
- Radius × radius = 15 × 15 = 225.
- Area = pi × radius × radius. With 3.14 for pi: 3.14 × 225 = 706.5 cm².
- If the picture shows the radius, use it as it is: do not halve it.
