Grade 7, Measurement and geometry

Coordinates: four quadrants

Read and plot points with positive and negative coordinates in all four quadrants.

Three levels

One skill, rising difficulty

Each sheet carries one level. The three are the same skill at rising difficulty, each named for what it practises.

Level 1: Three points, top half
Write the coordinates of each point as (x, y).
Level 2: Four points, all four quadrants
Write the coordinates of each point as (x, y).
Level 3: Plot the points
Plot each point on the grid and label it.

Worked example

How the sheet explains it

The helper printed at the top of each sheet: one solved example and the steps a student follows, before the first question. Every number sentence in it is proven by the same checker as the answer key.

Level 1: Three points, top half

  1. Start at the origin. Right and up are positive. Left is negative.
  2. A: right 3, then up 2. A is (3, 2).
  3. B: left 4, so x = 0 − 4 = −4. Then up 1. B is (−4, 1).

Level 2: Four points, all four quadrants

  1. Go across for x, then up or down for y. Left and down are negative.
  2. A: left 2, down 3. x = 0 − 2 = −2 and y = 0 − 3 = −3. A is (−2, −3).
  3. B: right 4, down 1, so y = 0 − 1 = −1. B is (4, −1).

Level 3: Plot the points

  1. Start at the origin. Move across for x, then up or down for y.
  2. A (−3, 4): go left 3, then up 4. Mark the dot A.
  3. B (2, −5): go right 2, then down 5. Mark the dot B.
