Grade 7, Money
Tips
Work out a tip on a restaurant bill, then the bill and the tip together.
Three levels
One skill, rising difficulty
Each sheet carries one level. The three are the same skill at rising difficulty, each named for what it practises.
- Level 1: 10% and 20% tips
- Find each tip. Write dollars and cents. A tip is worked out on the bill before tax. These questions leave the tax out.
- Level 2: 15% and 18% tips
- Find each tip. Write dollars and cents. A tip is worked out on the bill before tax. These questions leave the tax out.
- Level 3: The tip, then bill and tip together
- Find the tip, then the bill and tip together. Write dollars and cents. A tip is worked out on the bill before tax. These questions leave the tax out.

How the sheet explains it
The helper printed at the top of each sheet: one solved example and the steps a student follows, before the first question. Every number sentence in it is proven by the same checker as the answer key.
Level 1: 10% and 20% tips
Lunch for Ava at a diner costs $34.50. The tip is 20%. Tip: $6.90
- Find 10% first: $34.50 ÷ 10 = $3.45.
- 20% is 2 times 10%: 2 × $3.45 = $6.90.
- So the tip is 20% of $34.50, which is $6.90.
Level 2: 15% and 18% tips
Dinner for a family of 3 at a noodle shop costs $56.00. They leave an 18% tip. How much is the tip? $10.08
- 10% of $56.00 is $5.60, so 20% is $11.20.
- 1% is $0.56, so 2% is $1.12.
- 18% = 20% − 2%, so the tip is $11.20 − $1.12 = $10.08.
- For a 15% tip, add 10% and half of 10%: $5.60 + $2.80 = $8.40.
Level 3: The tip, then bill and tip together
Dinner for a family of 4 at a pizza place costs $68.40. They leave a 15% tip. Tip: $10.26 Bill and tip together: $78.66
- 10% of $68.40 is $6.84, and 5% is half of that: $3.42.
- The 15% tip: $6.84 + $3.42 = $10.26.
- Bill and tip together: $68.40 + $10.26 = $78.66.
