Worked example
How the sheet explains it
The helper printed at the top of each sheet: one solved example and the steps a student follows, before the first question. Every number sentence in it is proven by the same checker as the answer key.
Level 1: Find the saving
A board game costs $46.00. It is 30% off. How much do you save? $13.80
- Find 10% first: $46.00 ÷ 10 = $4.60.
- 30% is 3 times 10%: 3 × $4.60 = $13.80.
- So you save 30% of $46.00, which is $13.80.
Level 2: Find the sale price
A jacket costs $64.00. It is 15% off. Sale price: $54.40
- 10% of $64.00 is $6.40, and 5% is half of that: $3.20.
- The 15% discount: $6.40 + $3.20 = $9.60.
- Sale price: $64.00 − $9.60 = $54.40.
Level 3: Bigger percents: the saving, then the sale price
A backpack is 35% off. The regular price is $84.60. You save $29.61 You pay $54.99
- Write 35% as a decimal: 35% = 0.35.
- Of means times: you save 0.35 × $84.60 = $29.61.
- Sale price: $84.60 − $29.61 = $54.99.
- Check: 35% off means you pay 65%, and 0.65 × $84.60 = $54.99.
