- Find each saving, tax or tip. In BC, most things have 5% GST and 7% PST. Some have GST only. Tip questions leave the tax out.
- Level 2: Find the total
- Find each sale price or total. In BC, most things have 5% GST and 7% PST. Some have GST only. Tip questions leave the tax out.
- Level 3: Two or more steps
- Each question has more than one step. Work one step at a time. In BC, most things have 5% GST and 7% PST. Some have GST only. Tip questions leave the tax out.
Worked example
How the sheet explains it
The helper printed at the top of each sheet: one solved example and the steps a student follows, before the first question. Every number sentence in it is proven by the same checker as the answer key.
Level 1: One step
A guitar costs $245.00. GST and PST together are 12%. Tax: $29.40
- A guitar has GST and PST: 5% + 7% = 12%.
- 10% of $245.00 is $24.50. 1% is $2.45, so 2% is $4.90.
- 12% is 10% and 2%, so the tax is $24.50 + $4.90 = $29.40.
Level 2: Find the total
A pair of kids' rain boots costs $38.60. Children's shoes have 5% GST and no PST. GST: $1.93 Total: $40.53
- Find 10% first: $38.60 ÷ 10 = $3.86.
- GST is 5%, half of 10%: $3.86 ÷ 2 = $1.93.
- Total: $38.60 + $1.93 = $40.53.
Level 3: Two or more steps
A pair of headphones costs $96.00. It is 25% off. Then 12% tax is added to the sale price. Sale price: $72.00 Total: $80.64
- 25% is one quarter: $96.00 ÷ 4 = $24.00.
- Sale price: $96.00 − $24.00 = $72.00.
- Tax on the sale price: 10% is $7.20 and 2% is $1.44, so 12% is $8.64.
- Total: $72.00 + $8.64 = $80.64.
