Sales tax
Work out BC sales tax: 5% GST alone, or GST and PST together, then the total.
Three levels
One skill, rising difficulty
Each sheet carries one level. The three are the same skill at rising difficulty, each named for what it practises.
- Level 1: GST only (5%)
- Find the GST. In BC, most things have 5% GST and 7% PST. Some have GST only.
- Level 2: GST and PST (12%)
- Find the tax. In BC, most things have 5% GST and 7% PST. Some have GST only.
- Level 3: Find the tax and the total
- Find the tax and the total. In BC, most things have 5% GST and 7% PST. Some have GST only.
Worked example
How the sheet explains it

Level 1: GST only (5%)
A child's raincoat costs $46.80. Children's clothes have 5% GST and no PST. GST: $2.34
- Find 10% first: $46.80 ÷ 10 = $4.68.
- 5% is half of 10%: $4.68 ÷ 2 = $2.34.
- So the GST is 5% of $46.80, which is $2.34.
Level 2: GST and PST (12%)
A board game costs $65.00. GST and PST together are 12%. Tax: $7.80
- A board game has GST and PST: 5% + 7% = 12%.
- 10% of $65.00 is $6.50. 1% is $0.65, so 2% is $1.30.
- 12% is 10% and 2%, so the tax is $6.50 + $1.30 = $7.80.
Level 3: Find the tax and the total
Ava buys a skateboard for $84.75. GST and PST together are 12%. Tax: $10.17 Total: $94.92
- Write the percent as a decimal: 12% = 0.12. Of means times: 0.12 × $84.75 = $10.17.
- Total: $84.75 + $10.17 = $94.92.
- Check: the total is 112% of the price, and 1.12 × $84.75 = $94.92.
