Grade 4, Measurement and geometry

Tell the time

Read analog clocks to the quarter hour, five minutes and the minute.

Three levels

One skill, rising difficulty

Each sheet carries one level. The three are the same skill at rising difficulty, each named for what it practises.

Level 1: Hour, half hour and quarter hour
Write the time shown on each clock.
Level 2: Five-minute steps
Write the time shown on each clock.
Level 3: To the minute
Write the time shown on each clock.

Worked example

How the sheet explains it

The helper printed at the top of each sheet: one solved example and the steps a student follows, before the first question. Every number sentence in it is proven by the same checker as the answer key.

Level 1: Hour, half hour and quarter hour

  1. The short hand has passed the 2 but not the 3, so the hour is 2.
  2. The long hand is on the 9. Count by 5s from the 12: 9 × 5 = 45, so the time is 2:45. On the 12, write :00.
  3. 2:45 is also called quarter to 3, because it is 15 minutes before 3:00.

Level 2: Five-minute steps

  1. The short hand is between the 4 and the 5, so the hour is 4.
  2. The long hand is on the 7. Count by 5s: 7 × 5 = 35, so the time is 4:35.

Level 3: To the minute

  1. The short hand is between the 7 and the 8, so the hour is 7.
  2. The long hand is 3 small marks past the 4: 4 × 5 + 3 = 23.
  3. Write the hour, then the minutes: 7:23.
