Grade 4, Measurement and geometry

24-hour time

Change between a.m. and p.m. times and the 24-hour clock.

Three levels

One skill, rising difficulty

Each sheet carries one level. The three are the same skill at rising difficulty, each named for what it practises.

Level 1: Afternoon and evening to 24-hour
Write each time on the 24-hour clock.
Level 2: 24-hour to a.m. or p.m.
Write the time on a 12-hour clock. Write a.m. or p.m.
Level 3: Mixed, with midnight and noon
Change each time to the other clock. On a 12-hour clock, write a.m. or p.m. On a 24-hour clock: Use two digits for the hour, like 06:55.

Worked example

How the sheet explains it

The helper printed at the top of each sheet: one solved example and the steps a student follows, before the first question. Every number sentence in it is proven by the same checker as the answer key.

Level 1: Afternoon and evening to 24-hour

3:45 p.m. = 15 : 45

  1. It is p.m. and the hour is not 12, so add 12 to the hour: 3 + 12 = 15.
  2. Keep the minutes. 3:45 p.m. is 15:45.

Level 2: 24-hour to a.m. or p.m.

20:10 = 8 : 10 p.m.

  1. Hours 13 to 23 are after noon: write p.m. Hours 01 to 11 are before noon: keep the hour and write a.m.
  2. 20 is after noon, so take 12 away from the hour: 20 − 12 = 8. So 20:10 is 8:10 p.m.

Level 3: Mixed, with midnight and noon

12:15 a.m. = 00 : 15

  1. 12:15 a.m. is 15 minutes after midnight, the very start of the day.
  2. Midnight is hour 00, so 12:15 a.m. is 00:15. Noon is different: 12:15 p.m. stays 12:15.
