Grade 4, Measurement and geometry

Perimeter

Find the perimeter of rectangles, squares and regular shapes, or a missing side.

Three levels

One skill, rising difficulty

Each sheet carries one level. The three are the same skill at rising difficulty, each named for what it practises.

Level 1: Rectangles and squares
Find the perimeter of each shape.
Level 2: Regular shapes
Find the perimeter. All the sides of each shape are the same length.
Level 3: Find the missing side
Use the perimeter to find the missing side.

Worked example

How the sheet explains it

The helper printed at the top of each sheet: one solved example and the steps a student follows, before the first question. Every number sentence in it is proven by the same checker as the answer key.

Level 1: Rectangles and squares

  1. Perimeter is the distance all the way around the shape.
  2. Add all four sides: 7 + 4 + 7 + 4 = 22 cm.
  3. Or add the length and the width, then double: 7 + 4 = 11, and 2 × 11 = 22 cm.

Level 2: Regular shapes

A regular pentagon has sides of 7 cm. Perimeter = 35 cm

  1. A pentagon has 5 sides. In a regular shape all the sides are the same length.
  2. Add the 5 sides: 7 + 7 + 7 + 7 + 7 = 35 cm.
  3. Or multiply: 5 × 7 = 35 cm.

Level 3: Find the missing side

  1. Take away the two sides you know: 28 − 9 − 9 = 10 cm.
  2. The two missing sides share what is left: 10 ÷ 2 = 5 cm.
  3. Check: 9 + 5 + 9 + 5 = 28.
