Grade 4, Measurement and geometry

Draw the time

Draw the hour and minute hands to show a time.

Three levels

One skill, rising difficulty

Each sheet carries one level. The three are the same skill at rising difficulty, each named for what it practises.

Level 1: Hour, half hour and quarter hour
Draw the hands to show each time.
Level 2: Five-minute steps
Draw the hands to show each time.
Level 3: To the minute
Draw the hands to show each time.

Worked example

How the sheet explains it

The helper printed at the top of each sheet: one solved example and the steps a student follows, before the first question. Every number sentence in it is proven by the same checker as the answer key.

Level 1: Hour, half hour and quarter hour

  1. The minutes are 15: 15 ÷ 5 = 3, so the long hand points to the 3. For :00 it points to the 12.
  2. 15 < 30, so the short hand is a little past the 9. At :00 it is right on the 9, at :30 halfway to the 10.

Level 2: Five-minute steps

  1. The minutes are 40: 40 ÷ 5 = 8, so the long hand points to the 8.
  2. 40 > 30, so the short hand is more than halfway from the 6 to the 7.

Level 3: To the minute

  1. 17 = 3 × 5 + 2, so the long hand is 2 small marks past the 3.
  2. 17 < 30, so the short hand is a little past the 10, not yet halfway to the 11.
