Grade 5, Fractions, decimals and percents

Equivalent fractions

Find the missing number in equivalent fractions, then write fractions in lowest terms.

Three levels

One skill, rising difficulty

Each sheet carries one level. The three are the same skill at rising difficulty, each named for what it practises.

Level 1: Find the missing top number
Write the missing number to make equivalent fractions.
Level 2: Find the missing number, top or bottom
Write the missing number to make equivalent fractions.
Level 3: Write in lowest terms
Write each fraction in lowest terms.

Worked example

How the sheet explains it

The helper printed at the top of each sheet: one solved example and the steps a student follows, before the first question. Every number sentence in it is proven by the same checker as the answer key.

Level 1: Find the missing top number

3/5 = 12/20

  1. The bottom number 5 became 20: 5 × 4 = 20.
  2. Multiply the top number by 4 too: 3 × 4 = 12, so 3/5 = 12/20.

Level 2: Find the missing number, top or bottom

12/18 = 2/3

  1. The top number 12 became 2: 12 ÷ 6 = 2.
  2. Divide the bottom number by 6 too: 18 ÷ 6 = 3, so 12/18 = 2/3.
  3. If the number became bigger, multiply instead. Always do the same to the top and the bottom.

Level 3: Write in lowest terms

15/25 = 3/5

  1. Find the biggest number that divides both 15 and 25: 5.
  2. Divide the top and the bottom by 5: 15 ÷ 5 = 3 and 25 ÷ 5 = 5.
  3. If a number bigger than 1 still divides both, divide again. Only 1 divides both 3 and 5, so stop.
  4. So 15/25 = 3/5 in lowest terms.
