Grade 5, Fractions, decimals and percents

Add and subtract decimals to thousandths, mixed

Mixed review: add and subtract decimals to thousandths, with different places and whole numbers.

Three levels

One skill, rising difficulty

Each sheet carries one level. The three are the same skill at rising difficulty, each named for what it practises.

Level 1: Thousandths
Add or subtract. Line up the decimal points.
Level 2: Different numbers of places
Add or subtract. Line up the decimal points. Write zeros where you need them.
Level 3: With whole numbers
Add or subtract. Line up the decimal points. Write zeros where you need them.

Worked example

How the sheet explains it

The helper printed at the top of each sheet: one solved example and the steps a student follows, before the first question. Every number sentence in it is proven by the same checker as the answer key.

Level 1: Thousandths

  1. Line up the decimal points. Thousandths: 2 < 8, so regroup 1 hundredth: 12 − 8 = 4.
  2. Hundredths: the 5 is now 4. 4 − 1 = 3.
  3. Tenths: 3 < 7, so regroup 1 one: 13 − 7 = 6.
  4. Ones: the 8 is now 7. 7 − 4 = 3. So 8.352 − 4.718 = 3.634.

Level 2: Different numbers of places

  1. Line up the decimal points. 5.7 = 5.700, so both have thousandths.
  2. Thousandths: 0 + 6 = 6. Hundredths: 0 + 4 = 4.
  3. Tenths: 7 + 8 = 15. Write 5 and regroup 1 one. Ones: 5 + 3 + 1 = 9.
  4. So 5.700 + 3.846 = 9.546.

Level 3: With whole numbers

  1. Line up the decimal points. 10 = 10.000, so both have thousandths.
  2. Only zeros after the 1, so regroup 1 ten: 10 is 9 ones, 9 tenths, 9 hundredths and 10 thousandths.
  3. Thousandths: 10 − 5 = 5. Hundredths: 9 − 2 = 7. Tenths: 9 − 7 = 2.
  4. Ones: 9 − 3 = 6. The 1 ten is now 0. So 10.000 − 3.725 = 6.275.
