Grade 5, Fractions, decimals and percents

Compare decimals

Compare and order decimals to thousandths, even when they have different numbers of places.

Three levels

One skill, rising difficulty

Each sheet carries one level. The three are the same skill at rising difficulty, each named for what it practises.

Level 1: Same number of places
Write <, > or = in the circle.
Level 2: Different numbers of places
Write <, > or = in the circle.
Level 3: Order three decimals
Write the decimals in order, from least to greatest.

Worked example

How the sheet explains it

The helper printed at the top of each sheet: one solved example and the steps a student follows, before the first question. Every number sentence in it is proven by the same checker as the answer key.

Level 1: Same number of places

0.637 < 0.673

  1. Both have three places. Compare the digits from the left and stop at the first place where they differ.
  2. Tenths: 6 = 6. Hundredths: 3 < 7.
  3. So 0.637 < 0.673.

Level 2: Different numbers of places

0.5 > 0.45

  1. Write a zero so both have two places: 0.5 = 0.50.
  2. Read both as hundredths: 0.50 is 50 hundredths and 0.45 is 45 hundredths. 50 > 45.
  3. So 0.5 > 0.45.

Level 3: Order three decimals

0.405, 0.5, 0.45 0.405 < 0.45 < 0.5

  1. Write zeros so all have three places: 0.5 = 0.500 and 0.45 = 0.450.
  2. Read all three as thousandths: 405, 450 and 500. 405 < 450 < 500.
  3. In order: 0.405 < 0.45 < 0.5.
