Increasing and Decreasing Patterns: Find What Changes Each Step
- Grade 3
- Mathematics
- 1 min 26 s
- British Columbia
- BC3-MA-17
Three rows of number cards show 3, 5, 7, 9 (add 2), 30, 25, 20, 15 (take away 5) and 2, 4, 8, 16 (double), and every jump between two cards is drawn and checked aloud. Each row is labelled increasing or decreasing, and the same change is used once more to find what comes next (11, 10 and 32), ending on the recap "Find the change, then do it again."

Transcript
What the lesson says
What comes next in the pattern 3, 5, 7, 9?
What changes each step, from one number to the next?
3 plus 2 is 5, 5 plus 2 is 7, and 7 plus 2 is 9.
The numbers get bigger each step, so this pattern is increasing.
9 plus 2 is 11, so 11 comes next.
What comes next in 30, 25, 20, 15?
30 take away 5 is 25, 25 take away 5 is 20, and 20 take away 5 is 15.
The numbers get smaller each step, so this pattern is decreasing.
15 take away 5 is 10, so 10 comes next.
What comes next in 2, 4, 8, 16?
Each step doubles the number, which is the same as times 2.
2 doubled is 4, 4 doubled is 8, and 8 doubled is 16.
These numbers get bigger each step too, so this pattern is increasing.
16 doubled is 32, so 32 comes next.
Find what changes each step, then do it again to see what comes next.
