Starting from three short sentences, the video takes the word cat and changes only its first sound to make hat and mat, then does the same with cake, lake and rake and with light, night and right, putting each word family in its own list. Back in the sentences, the words from each family light up in their list's colour, and the video ends on the recap: same ending, new first sound, a word family.

What the lesson says

Read these three short sentences.

Which of these words share a pattern?

Let's look closely at the word cat.

The word cat ends with at.

Change the first sound, and cat becomes hat.

Change it again, and hat becomes mat.

Cat, hat and mat share the ending at, so they are a word family.

Now keep the ending of cake, and change the first sound.

Cake, lake and rake are another word family.

Now do the same with the word light.

Light, night and right make a third word family.

Now look back at our three sentences.

Cat, sat and mat belong to the first family.

Bake, cake and lake belong to the second family.

Light and night belong to the third family.

Same ending, new first sound: that is a word family!
