Students read a short text about Lena's seed and answer "Did Lena's seed grow?" with "Yes, it grew," then check the sentences one by one to find the one that proves it: watering does not, but "After two weeks, a green shoot popped up" does. That sentence is copied word for word in quotation marks to back up the answer, ending on the recap "Answer, then prove it with the text."

What the lesson says

How can you prove your answer about a text?

Read this short text about Lena.

Here is a question: did Lena's seed grow?

You might answer, yes, it grew.

But how do you know?

Proof from the text is called evidence.

Read the text again and find the sentence that proves it.

She watered it every morning, but that does not prove it grew.

After two weeks, a green shoot popped up, and that proves it grew.

Now back up your answer with that sentence.

Copy the exact words and put them in quotation marks.

Now your answer has evidence to back it up.

Answer the question, then prove it with a sentence from the text.
