A tiny picture story is told one card at a time: Sam flies a red kite ("Up, up!"), the kite gets stuck in a tree ("Stuck!"), and the wind blows it free ("Free!"). The three cards are counted and named beginning, middle and end, then joined in order with arrows and read again, ending on the recap that a story has a beginning, a middle and an end.

What the lesson says

Here is a little story about Sam and a kite.

Sam flies a red kite. Up, up!

Oh no! The kite gets stuck in a tree.

Whoosh! The wind blows the kite free.

This story has three parts. One, two, three!

First comes the beginning. We meet Sam and the kite.

Next comes the middle. Something goes wrong!

Last comes the end. The kite is free, and Sam smiles.

The parts go in order, so the story makes sense.

Let's read it again. Up, up! Stuck! Free!

A story has a beginning, a middle and an end.
