A short story about Tia and her crashing kite is read, and three clues are picked out of it: the problem, what Tia did, and how it ends. Together they show the story's theme, "Keep trying, even when it is hard," which is then written under the story and recapped as the big lesson a story teaches.

What the lesson says

How can we find the lesson a story teaches?

Let's read this short story about Tia.

The big lesson a story teaches is called its theme.

We can find it by looking for clues in the story.

Clue one is the problem: her kite kept crashing.

Clue two is what Tia did: she tried again and again.

Clue three is how it ends: her kite rose high.

So what did Tia learn?

She learned to keep trying, even when it is hard.

A theme is a lesson for all of us, not just for Tia.

Now we can write the theme under the story.

The theme is the big lesson a story teaches us.
