A reader reads a short story about Sam aloud and says "He mad a big sandwich", so we stop and ask whether it looks right, sounds right and makes sense, and the answer is no each time. They go back, reread, find the word "made", and the video ends on the habit to keep: as you read, ask if it makes sense, and if not, reread and fix it.

What the lesson says

As you read, how do you know you read it right?

Here is a short story about Sam.

Let's read it aloud: Sam came home hungry.

Next we read: He mad a big sandwich. Is that right?

Stop and check it with three questions.

Does it look right? Look at the letters.

No! The word on the page ends with an e.

Does it sound right? No, we do not talk like that.

Does it make sense? No! What did Sam do to the sandwich?

So go back and reread the sentence.

The word is made. He made a big sandwich.

Now it looks right, sounds right and makes sense.

Now keep reading: Then he ate every bite!

As you read, ask: does it make sense? If not, reread and fix it.
