A drum plays a steady beat that leaves evenly spaced marks along a line of time, and children clap along. A recorder then plays long and short sounds drawn as bars on top of the beat, first on their own and then together with the drum.

What the lesson says

What are the beat and the rhythm in music?

This line shows time going by.

Most music has a steady beat.

Each beat is one mark on the line.

The gaps between the beats are all the same.

Now clap along with the drum beat!

Rhythm is a pattern of long and short sounds.

This long bar is a long sound.

These short bars are short sounds.

Here, two short sounds fit in one beat.

Listen to the rhythm on its own.

Now hear the rhythm on top of the beat.

The beat stays steady, and the rhythm goes on top.
