Grade 4, Operations
Word problems: multiply and divide
Short stories to solve by multiplying or dividing by a one-digit number.
Three levels
One skill, rising difficulty
Each sheet carries one level. The three are the same skill at rising difficulty, each named for what it practises.
- Level 1: Multiply
- Read each problem. Multiply to find the answer.
- Level 2: Divide (no remainders)
- Read each problem. Divide to find the answer.
- Level 3: Mixed
- Read each problem. Decide whether to multiply or divide.
Worked example
How the sheet explains it
The helper printed at the top of each sheet: one solved example and the steps a student follows, before the first question. Every number sentence in it is proven by the same checker as the answer key.
Level 1: Multiply
A teacher has 6 boxes of crayons. Each box has 24 crayons. How many crayons does the teacher have? Answer: 144 crayons
- Equal groups and a total to find: multiply.
- 6 × 24 = 6 × 20 + 6 × 4 = 120 + 24 = 144.
- The teacher has 144 crayons.
Level 2: Divide (no remainders)
A teacher puts 96 crayons into 4 boxes, the same number in each box. How many crayons go in each box? Answer: 24 crayons
- A total shared into equal groups: divide.
- Split 96 into 80 + 16, because 80 is twenty 4s and 16 is four 4s.
- 80 ÷ 4 = 20 and 16 ÷ 4 = 4, so 96 ÷ 4 = 20 + 4 = 24. Check: 4 × 24 = 96.
Level 3: Mixed
The gym has 168 chairs in 7 equal rows. How many chairs are in each row? Answer: 24 chairs
- The total and the number of rows are known: divide.
- Split 168 into 140 + 28, because 140 is twenty 7s and 28 is four 7s.
- 140 ÷ 7 = 20 and 28 ÷ 7 = 4, so 168 ÷ 7 = 20 + 4 = 24. Check: 7 × 24 = 168.
