Grade 4, Operations
4 times table
Practise the 4 times table, then use it to divide and to find missing numbers.
Three levels
One skill, rising difficulty
Each sheet carries one level. The three are the same skill at rising difficulty, each named for what it practises.
- Level 1: Multiply
- Multiply. Use a fact you know to help.
- Level 2: Divide
- Divide. Use a multiplication fact to help.
- Level 3: Missing number
- Write the missing number.
Worked example
How the sheet explains it
The helper printed at the top of each sheet: one solved example and the steps a student follows, before the first question. Every number sentence in it is proven by the same checker as the answer key.
Level 1: Multiply
4 × 7 = 2 × 7 + 2 × 7 = 28
- 4 is double 2, so 4 × 7 is double 2 × 7.
- 2 × 7 = 14.
- Double 14: 14 + 14 = 28.
Level 2: Divide
4 × 6 = 24, so 24 ÷ 4 = 6
- Think: 4 × ____ = 24.
- Try 6: 4 × 6 = 2 × 6 + 2 × 6 = 12 + 12 = 24. It works, so the missing number is 6.
- So 24 ÷ 4 = 6.
Level 3: Missing number
28 = 7 × 4
- Start from a fact you know: 5 × 4 = 20.
- Count on by 4s until you reach 28: 24, 28. That is 2 more 4s.
- 5 + 2 = 7, so 28 = 7 × 4.
- For ____ ÷ 4 = 7, think 7 × 4 = 28. For 28 ÷ ____ = 4, think 4 × ____ = 28.
