Grade 3, Number sense
Place value to 1000
Hundreds, tens and ones: count blocks, write sums, and watch for zeros.
Three levels
One skill, rising difficulty
Each sheet carries one level. The three are the same skill at rising difficulty, each named for what it practises.
- Level 1: Count the blocks
- Count the hundreds, tens and ones. Write the number.
- Level 2: Write it as a sum
- Write the missing number.
- Level 3: Hundreds, tens and ones with zeros
- Write how many hundreds, tens and ones, or how many tens.
Worked example
How the sheet explains it
The helper printed at the top of each sheet: one solved example and the steps a student follows, before the first question. Every number sentence in it is proven by the same checker as the answer key.
Level 1: Count the blocks
- A flat is 100, so 2 flats are 200. A rod is 10, so 3 rods are 30.
- 5 cubes are 5 ones.
- 200 + 30 + 5 = 235.
Level 2: Write it as a sum
342 = 300 + 40 + 2
- 342 has 3 hundreds, 4 tens and 2 ones.
- 4 tens is 40.
- So 342 = 300 + 40 + 2.
Level 3: Hundreds, tens and ones with zeros
205 = 2 hundreds 0 tens 5 ones
- Read the digits from the left: 2, then 0, then 5.
- 2 hundreds is 200. The 0 means there are no tens.
- Check: 200 + 0 + 5 = 205.
- Some questions ask for tens only. 3 hundreds is 30 tens, and 4 more tens make 34 tens, so 340 is 34 tens.
