Grade 4, Operations

Multiply by a 1-digit number

Multiply two-digit and three-digit numbers by a one-digit number in columns.

Three levels

One skill, rising difficulty

Each sheet carries one level. The three are the same skill at rising difficulty, each named for what it practises.

Level 1: 2 digits, no regrouping
Multiply.
Level 2: 2 digits, with regrouping
Multiply. Regroup when you need to.
Level 3: 3 digits
Multiply. Regroup when you need to.

Worked example

How the sheet explains it

The helper printed at the top of each sheet: one solved example and the steps a student follows, before the first question. Every number sentence in it is proven by the same checker as the answer key.

Level 1: 2 digits, no regrouping

  1. Multiply the ones: 2 × 3 = 6. Write 6 under the ones.
  2. Multiply the tens: 3 × 3 = 9. Write 9 under the tens.
  3. So 32 × 3 = 96.

Level 2: 2 digits, with regrouping

  1. Ones: 7 × 4 = 28 ones. Write 8 in the ones and regroup 2 tens.
  2. Tens: 2 × 4 = 8 tens. Add the 2 regrouped tens: 8 + 2 = 10 tens.
  3. 10 tens is 1 hundred and 0 tens: write 0 in the tens, 1 in the hundreds. So 27 × 4 = 108.

Level 3: 3 digits

  1. Ones: 6 × 4 = 24 ones. Write 4 in the ones and regroup 2 tens.
  2. Tens: 3 × 4 = 12 tens, and 12 + 2 = 14 tens. Write 4 tens and regroup 1 hundred.
  3. Hundreds: 2 × 4 = 8, and 8 + 1 = 9 hundreds. So 236 × 4 = 944.
