- Level 2: Change unknown
- Write the missing number in the box.
- Level 3: Start unknown
- Write the missing number in the box.
Worked example
How the sheet explains it
The helper printed at the top of each sheet: one solved example and the steps a student follows, before the first question. Every number sentence in it is proven by the same checker as the answer key.
Level 1: Result unknown
6 × 7 = 42
- Break 7 into 5 and 2: 6 × 5 = 30 and 6 × 2 = 12.
- Add: 30 + 12 = 42. Write 42 in the box.
Level 2: Change unknown
6 × 7 = 42
- Start from a fact you know: 6 × 5 = 30.
- Count up by 6s to 42: 36, 42. That is 2 more 6s.
- 5 + 2 = 7, so 6 × 7 = 42. Write 7 in the box.
Level 3: Start unknown
28 ÷ 4 = 7
- The start is missing. Undo the division with multiplication.
- 7 × 4 = 28.
- Check: 28 ÷ 4 = 7. Write 28 in the box.
