Elapsed time
Find how much time passed between a start and an end time.
Three levels
One skill, rising difficulty
Each sheet carries one level. The three are the same skill at rising difficulty, each named for what it practises.
- Level 1: Whole and half hours
- How much time has passed? Write the hours and minutes.
- Level 2: Any minutes, same half of the day
- How much time has passed? Write the hours and minutes.
- Level 3: Across noon
- How much time has passed? Write the hours and minutes.

How the sheet explains it
The helper printed at the top of each sheet: one solved example and the steps a student follows, before the first question. Every number sentence in it is proven by the same checker as the answer key.
Level 1: Whole and half hours
Start: 8:30 a.m. End: 11:00 a.m. Time passed: 2 h 30 min
- Count whole hours from the start: 8:30 to 10:30 is 2 hours, because 10 − 8 = 2.
- Then count the minutes: 10:30 to 11:00 is 30 minutes, because 60 − 30 = 30.
- Time passed: 2 h 30 min.
Level 2: Any minutes, same half of the day
Start: 9:40 a.m. End: 11:50 a.m. Time passed: 2 h 10 min
- Count up to the next hour: 9:40 to 10:00 is 20 minutes, because 60 − 40 = 20.
- Count the hours: 10:00 to 11:00 is 1 hour. Then 11:00 to 11:50 is 50 more minutes.
- Add the minutes: 20 + 50 = 70. If the minutes make 60 or more, trade 60 minutes for 1 hour: 70 − 60 = 10.
- Time passed: 1 h + 1 h 10 min = 2 h 10 min.
Level 3: Across noon
Start: 10:30 a.m. End: 1:15 p.m. Time passed: 2 h 45 min
- Count up to the next hour: 10:30 to 11:00 is 30 minutes.
- 11:00 a.m. to 12 noon is 1 hour, then 1 more hour to 1:00 p.m.: 1 + 1 = 2 hours.
- Count the minutes left: 1:00 to 1:15 is 15 minutes. Add: 30 + 15 = 45.
- Time passed: 2 h 45 min.
