Grade 5, Measurement and geometry
Area and perimeter
Find the perimeter and the area of rectangles, and see that the same perimeter can give different areas.
Three levels
One skill, rising difficulty
Each sheet carries one level. The three are the same skill at rising difficulty, each named for what it practises.
- Level 1: Small rectangles
- Find the perimeter and the area of each rectangle.
- Level 2: Larger rectangles
- Find the perimeter and the area of each rectangle.
- Level 3: Same perimeter, different area
- Find the perimeter and the area of each rectangle. What do you notice?
Worked example
How the sheet explains it
The helper printed at the top of each sheet: one solved example and the steps a student follows, before the first question. Every number sentence in it is proven by the same checker as the answer key.
Level 1: Small rectangles
- For the perimeter, add the four sides. 7 + 3 + 7 + 3 = 20 cm.
- For the area, multiply length by width. 7 × 3 = 21 cm².
- Perimeter is a length: cm or m. Area counts squares: cm² or m².
Level 2: Larger rectangles
- Perimeter = 2 × (length + width) = 2 × (15 + 8) = 46 cm.
- Area = length × width = 15 × 8 = 120 cm².
- Perimeter is a length: cm or m. Area counts squares: cm² or m².
Level 3: Same perimeter, different area
Rectangle A is 7 cm by 3 cm. Rectangle B is 6 cm by 4 cm. Perimeter of A = 20 cm Perimeter of B = 20 cm Area of A = 21 cm² Area of B = 24 cm²
- Perimeter of A = 2 × (7 + 3) = 20 cm. Perimeter of B = 2 × (6 + 4) = 20 cm.
- Area of A = 7 × 3 = 21 cm². Area of B = 6 × 4 = 24 cm².
- Same perimeter, but 21 < 24: the areas are different.
