Grade 5, Measurement and geometry

Area of rectangles

Find the area of rectangles and squares, or a missing side.

Three levels

One skill, rising difficulty

Each sheet carries one level. The three are the same skill at rising difficulty, each named for what it practises.

Level 1: Small rectangles
Find the area of each shape.
Level 2: Larger rectangles and squares
Find the area of each shape.
Level 3: Find the missing side
Use the area to find the missing side.

Worked example

How the sheet explains it

The helper printed at the top of each sheet: one solved example and the steps a student follows, before the first question. Every number sentence in it is proven by the same checker as the answer key.

Level 1: Small rectangles

  1. Area of a rectangle = length × width.
  2. Area = 6 × 4 = 24 cm².
  3. That is 4 rows of 6 squares, each 1 cm by 1 cm.

Level 2: Larger rectangles and squares

  1. Area of a rectangle = length × width.
  2. Split 14 into 10 and 4: 10 × 9 = 90 and 4 × 9 = 36.
  3. Add the parts: 90 + 36 = 126. Area = 14 × 9 = 126 cm².

Level 3: Find the missing side

  1. Area = length × width, so divide the area by the side you know.
  2. 56 ÷ 8 = 7, so the missing side is 7 cm.
  3. Check: 8 × 7 = 56 cm².
