- Add the doubles.
- Level 2: Near doubles
- Use a double to help you add.
- Level 3: Halves and missing numbers
- Write the missing number.
Worked example
How the sheet explains it
The helper printed at the top of each sheet: one solved example and the steps a student follows, before the first question. Every number sentence in it is proven by the same checker as the answer key.
Level 1: Doubles
7 + 7 = 14
- A double adds a number to itself.
- Split each 7 into 5 and 2: 5 + 5 = 10 and 2 + 2 = 4.
- 10 + 4 = 14, so 7 + 7 = 14.
Level 2: Near doubles
6 + 7 = 13
- 7 is 1 more than 6.
- Use the double: 6 + 6 = 12.
- Add 1 more: 12 + 1 = 13, so 6 + 7 = 13.
Level 3: Halves and missing numbers
7 + 8 = 15
- Use the double: 7 + 7 = 14.
- 15 is 1 more than 14, so add 1 more to 7: 8.
- So 7 + 8 = 15.
- When you take away half, use a double: 8 + 8 = 16, so 16 − 8 = 8.
