Grade 4, Fractions, decimals and percents
Compare fractions
Compare fractions with the same denominator, use one half and 1 as benchmarks, and put fractions in order.
Three levels
One skill, rising difficulty
Each sheet carries one level. The three are the same skill at rising difficulty, each named for what it practises.
- Level 1: Same denominator
- Write <, > or = in the circle.
- Level 2: Compare with one half and 1
- Write <, > or = in the circle.
- Level 3: Order three fractions
- Write the fractions in order, from least to greatest.
Worked example
How the sheet explains it
The helper printed at the top of each sheet: one solved example and the steps a student follows, before the first question. Every number sentence in it is proven by the same checker as the answer key.
Level 1: Same denominator
3/8 < 5/8
- Both fractions have the same bottom number, so compare the top numbers.
- 3 < 5, so 3/8 < 5/8.
Level 2: Compare with one half and 1
3/8 < 1/2
- Compare with one half: double the top number. 3 + 3 = 6.
- Compare the double with the bottom number: 6 < 8, so 3/8 < 1/2.
- If the double is bigger, the fraction is more than one half. If they are equal, it equals one half.
- A fraction with the same top and bottom number equals 1. With a smaller top number it is less than 1.
Level 3: Order three fractions
1/2, 7/8, 1/8 1/8 < 1/2 < 7/8
- Compare with one half. Half of 8 is 4, so 1/2 = 4/8.
- 1/8 < 4/8 and 7/8 > 4/8.
- In order: 1/8 < 1/2 < 7/8.
