Grade 4, Fractions, decimals and percents

Add and subtract decimals, mixed

Mixed review: add and subtract decimals to hundredths in columns.

Three levels

One skill, rising difficulty

Each sheet carries one level. The three are the same skill at rising difficulty, each named for what it practises.

Level 1: Tenths
Add or subtract. Line up the decimal points.
Level 2: Hundredths
Add or subtract. Line up the decimal points.
Level 3: Tenths and hundredths together
Add or subtract. Line up the decimal points. Write zeros where you need them.

Worked example

How the sheet explains it

The helper printed at the top of each sheet: one solved example and the steps a student follows, before the first question. Every number sentence in it is proven by the same checker as the answer key.

Level 1: Tenths

  1. Line up the decimal points. Add from the right.
  2. Tenths: 6 + 8 = 14. Write 4 and regroup 10 tenths as 1 one.
  3. Ones: 4 + 2 + 1 = 7. So 4.6 + 2.8 = 7.4.

Level 2: Hundredths

  1. Line up the decimal points. Subtract from the right.
  2. Hundredths: 2 < 5, so regroup 1 tenth: 12 − 5 = 7.
  3. Tenths: the 3 is now 2. 2 < 7, so regroup 1 one: 12 − 7 = 5.
  4. Ones: the 5 is now 4. 4 − 2 = 2. So 5.32 − 2.75 = 2.57.

Level 3: Tenths and hundredths together

  1. Line up the decimal points. 9.2 = 9.20, so both have hundredths.
  2. Hundredths: 0 < 5, so regroup 1 tenth: 10 − 5 = 5.
  3. Tenths: the 2 is now 1. 1 < 3, so regroup 1 one: 11 − 3 = 8.
  4. Ones: the 9 is now 8. 8 − 4 = 4. So 9.20 − 4.35 = 4.85.
