Worked example

How the sheet explains it

The helper printed at the top of each sheet: one solved example and the steps a student follows, before the first question. Every number sentence in it is proven by the same checker as the answer key.

Level 1: 5-digit numbers

  1. Line up the ones. Ones: 6 + 5 = 11. Write 1 and regroup 1 ten.
  2. Tens: 8 + 7 + 1 = 16. Write 6 and regroup 1 hundred. Hundreds: 5 + 2 + 1 = 8.
  3. Thousands: 7 + 6 = 13. Write 3 and regroup 1 ten thousand.
  4. Ten thousands: 4 + 3 + 1 = 8. So 47 586 + 36 275 = 83 861.

Level 2: 6-digit numbers

  1. Line up the ones. Ones: 5 + 9 = 14. Write 4 and regroup 1 ten.
  2. Tens: 7 + 4 + 1 = 12. Write 2 and regroup 1 hundred. Hundreds: 2 + 5 + 1 = 8.
  3. Thousands: 3 + 8 = 11. Write 1 and regroup 1 ten thousand. Ten thousands: 6 + 1 + 1 = 8.
  4. Hundred thousands: 4 + 2 = 6. So 463 275 + 218 549 = 681 824.

Level 3: Three numbers

  1. Line up the ones. Ones: 8 + 7 + 9 = 24. Write 4 and regroup 2 tens.
  2. Tens: 3 + 1 + 3 + 2 = 9. Hundreds: 5 + 6 + 4 = 15. Write 5 and regroup 1 thousand.
  3. Thousands: 2 + 4 + 1 + 1 = 8. Ten thousands: 6 + 1 + 7 = 14. Write 4 and regroup 1 hundred thousand.
  4. Hundred thousands: 2 + 3 + 1 = 6. So 262 538 + 314 617 + 71 439 = 648 594.
