Grade 5, Operations
Add and subtract large numbers, mixed
A review sheet that mixes adding and subtracting 5-digit and 6-digit numbers in columns.
Three levels
One skill, rising difficulty
Each sheet carries one level. The three are the same skill at rising difficulty, each named for what it practises.
- Level 1: 5-digit numbers
- Look at the sign. Add or subtract.
- Level 2: 6-digit numbers
- Look at the sign. Add or subtract.
- Level 3: With zeros
- Look at the sign. Add or subtract.
Worked example
How the sheet explains it
The helper printed at the top of each sheet: one solved example and the steps a student follows, before the first question. Every number sentence in it is proven by the same checker as the answer key.
Level 1: 5-digit numbers
- Look at the sign: − means subtract. Line up the ones.
- Ones: 7 − 5 = 2. Tens: 2 − 1 = 1. Hundreds: 5 − 3 = 2.
- Thousands: 3 < 6, so regroup 1 ten thousand: 13 − 6 = 7.
- Ten thousands: the 8 is now 7, and 7 − 4 = 3. So 83 527 − 46 315 = 37 212.
Level 2: 6-digit numbers
- Look at the sign: + means add. Ones: 7 + 5 = 12. Write 2 and regroup 1 ten.
- Tens: 6 + 1 + 1 = 8. Hundreds: 4 + 3 = 7. Thousands: 8 + 4 = 12. Write 2 and regroup 1 ten thousand.
- Ten thousands: 5 + 7 + 1 = 13. Write 3 and regroup 1 hundred thousand.
- Hundred thousands: 3 + 2 + 1 = 6. So 358 467 + 274 315 = 632 782.
Level 3: With zeros
- Look at the sign: − means subtract. Ones: 6 < 8, and the tens and hundreds are 0.
- So take 1 thousand: 1000 = 900 + 90 + 10. Ones: 10 + 6 = 16, and 16 − 8 = 8.
- Tens: 9 − 4 = 5. Hundreds: 9 − 2 = 7. Thousands: the 5 is now 4, and 4 − 3 = 1.
- Ten thousands: 2 − 1 = 1. Hundred thousands: 9 − 4 = 5. So 925 006 − 413 248 = 511 758.
