Grade 4, Operations

Add and subtract to 10 000, mixed

A review sheet that mixes adding and subtracting 4-digit numbers in columns.

Three levels

One skill, rising difficulty

Each sheet carries one level. The three are the same skill at rising difficulty, each named for what it practises.

Level 1: No regrouping
Look at the sign. Add or subtract.
Level 2: With regrouping
Look at the sign. Add or subtract.
Level 3: With zeros
Look at the sign. Add or subtract.

Worked example

How the sheet explains it

The helper printed at the top of each sheet: one solved example and the steps a student follows, before the first question. Every number sentence in it is proven by the same checker as the answer key.

Level 1: No regrouping

  1. Look at the sign: − means subtract. Line up the places.
  2. Ones: 5 − 3 = 2. Tens: 7 − 5 = 2. Hundreds: 4 − 1 = 3.
  3. Thousands: 6 − 2 = 4. So 6475 − 2153 = 4322.

Level 2: With regrouping

  1. Look at the sign: + means add. Ones: 6 + 8 = 14. Write 4 and regroup 1 ten.
  2. Tens: 8 + 3 + 1 = 12. Write 2 and regroup 1 hundred.
  3. Hundreds: 4 + 7 + 1 = 12. Write 2 and regroup 1 thousand.
  4. Thousands: 5 + 2 + 1 = 8. So 5486 + 2738 = 8224.

Level 3: With zeros

  1. Look at the sign: − means subtract. Ones: 0 < 6, and the tens and hundreds are 0.
  2. No tens or hundreds to take from, so take 1 thousand: 1000 = 900 + 90 + 10.
  3. So 8000 = 7000 + 900 + 90 + 10. Ones: 10 − 6 = 4. Tens: 9 − 7 = 2. Hundreds: 9 − 5 = 4.
  4. Thousands: the 8 is now 7, and 7 − 3 = 4. So 8000 − 3576 = 4424.
