Starting at the origin, the video uses the pair (−4, 3) to show that the first number, x, says how far to go right or left and the second number, y, says how far to go up or down. It moves left 4 and then up 3, counting each step, then marks and labels the point, checks it lines up with −4 on the x-axis and 3 on the y-axis, and ends with the recap "go across by x first, then up or down by y."

What the lesson says

How do we plot the point negative 4, 3 on a grid?

The x-axis goes across, and the y-axis goes up and down.

The two axes cross at the origin, the point zero, zero.

In a pair, the first number is x and the second number is y.

x tells you to go right if it is positive, or left if it is negative.

y tells you to go up if it is positive, or down if it is negative.

Always start at the origin.

x is negative 4, so go 4 units to the left.

y is positive 3, so go 3 units up.

Mark a dot there and label it negative 4, 3.

Check that it lines up with negative 4 on the x-axis and 3 on the y-axis.

To plot any point, start at the origin, go across by x, then up or down by y.
