A paper clip shows that 1 gram is very light, and a litre of water shows that 1 kilogram is much heavier and the same as 1000 grams. A bag of apples is then weighed on a balance with litre bottles of water: two bottles make it level, so 1 kg + 1 kg = 2 kg and the bag weighs about 2 kilograms.

What the lesson says

How heavy is this bag of apples?

Should we weigh it in grams or in kilograms?

A paper clip weighs about one gram.

A litre of water weighs about one kilogram.

One kilogram is the same as one thousand grams.

Let's put the bag and a paper clip on a balance.

The paper clip is far too light, so let's use kilograms.

Put one litre bottle of water on the other side.

The bag side is still down, so the bag is more than one kilogram.

Add a second bottle, and now the balance is level.

One kilogram plus one kilogram is two kilograms.

So the bag of apples weighs about two kilograms.

Use grams for light things and kilograms for heavy things.
