The points A(−3, 2) and B(4, 2) have the same y-coordinate, so they sit on the same horizontal grid line and only x changes between them. Counting along the line gives 7 units, and splitting the gap at the y-axis checks it (3 + 4 = 7), so A and B are 7 units apart.

What the lesson says

How far is the point A at negative 3, 2 from the point B at 4, 2?

First, plot both points on the grid.

Both points have the same y-coordinate, 2.

So they sit on the same horizontal grid line.

Only the x-coordinate changes, from negative 3 to 4.

Count the units along the line from A to B.

That makes 7 units.

A quicker way is to split the gap at the y-axis.

A is 3 units to the left of the y-axis.

B is 4 units to the right of it.

Add the two parts. 3 plus 4 is 7.

So the distance from A to B is 7 units.

On a grid line, the distance is the number of units between the coordinates that change.
