Words That Stand Out: Bold, Underline and Colour
- Grade 2
- English Language Arts

A note by a hot stove says "The pan is hot," but the most important word looks just like the others. The word "hot" is made bold, then underlined, then red, and the plain note and the changed note are compared side by side to show how these three ways make an important word stand out.

What the lesson says
Look, a pan is cooking on the stove.
Let's read the note. The pan is hot.
Which word in the note matters most?
The word hot matters most. It keeps us safe.
But hot looks the same as the other words.
Let's make hot stand out.
Bold makes the letters thick and dark.
Underline puts a line under the word.
Colour can paint the word bright red.
That makes three ways: bold, underline and colour.
Before, hot was easy to miss.
After, hot jumps right out at you!
Bold, underline and colour make important words stand out.
