Worked example
How the sheet explains it
The helper printed at the top of each sheet: one solved example and the steps a student follows, before the first question. Every number sentence in it is proven by the same checker as the answer key.
Level 1: Put together
Ava has 23 stickers. Liam has 15 stickers. How many stickers do Ava and Liam have in all? Answer: 38 stickers
- Ava's and Liam's stickers are put together, so add.
- Add the tens: 20 + 10 = 30. Add the ones: 3 + 5 = 8. Then 30 + 8 = 38.
- Ava and Liam have 38 stickers in all.
Level 2: Take away and compare
Maya had 45 stickers. Maya gave 12 stickers to Noah. How many stickers does Maya have left? Answer: 33 stickers
- Giving some away means taking away, so subtract.
- Number sentence: 45 − 12 = 33.
- Maya has 33 stickers left.
- How many more or fewer asks for the difference: subtract or count up.
Level 3: Find the missing part
Omar had 18 rocks. Omar got some more. Now Omar has 30 rocks. How many rocks did Omar get? Answer: 12 rocks
- Find the whole. Omar ends with 30, so 30 is the whole.
- Count up from 18: 18 + 2 = 20, 20 + 10 = 30. That is 12.
- Omar got 12 rocks.
- If the whole is missing, add the parts.
